Paraffin is a petroleum by-product. Paraffin wax is made from the sludge that sits in the bottom of the gas barrels – the same gas that you put in your car. Typically paraffin candles are also made with wicks containing metal filaments. When these candles are burned they emit soot, the puffs of black smoke that come off the wick, while also emitting toxins from the metal wicks. When your jars turn black, what else is this soot getting in to? This soot coats your furniture, walls, curtains and surroundings as well as your lungs. We equate burning a paraffin candle to running a car indoors and letting the exhaust encapsulate the air in the room. You wouldn't want to be breathing that exhaust, but burning paraffin candles is very much the same thing. Many large and popular candle companies make their candles from paraffin, because it is cheap and the profit margins are large.
